Corners of Brisbane

I spent the most time I was in Australia by hanging around in Brisbane. This happened because I was trying to avoid thunderstorms coming up on the northern coast. As you might have noticed, I am a coast lovers, but I have to admit that Brisbane was one of my favourite cities of Australia. I walked through the different districts, and I put together a list of my favourite places.

1. Southbank

Yeah, I know what you’re gonna think, city centre, crowded, touristy, why should I go there? Well, Southbank is pretty impressive actually. This part of the city was partly rebuilt back in 1992 because of the Expo. You’ll have loads of choices here, take a walk or jog along the river, hop on the Eye at sunset (amazing views!), visit the Collective Market, where you can buy some unique handcrafts. In addition, who needs a beach when you can hang out at this huge waterpark with the skyline just behind you? Southbank is also well known for being the epicentre of nightlife: drinking, dining and clubbing is very popular here.

2. Kangaroo Point

If you wanna do the opposite, just go a little bit away from the centre and start your walk at Kangaroo Point. You can reach it with the free ferries starting from Southbank. This place offers you a great panoramic view of the city and the walk will bring you back at CBD. It’s also a great spot for sports or a barbeque with friends by the water. The best time to enjoy a stroll here is around late afternoon, and, back in Southbank, you can enjoy a waterfront drink in one of the hip bars.

3. The West End

The West End was one of my favourites. This little bohemian district reminded me a lot of San Francisco, especially when I walked around in the side streets. The houses are small and charming here, just like in the Californian city. The West End is well known for all the streetart corners, the vintage shops and the tiny restaurants. The Boundary Street Markets are always worth a visit if you’re especially looking for some unique furnitures or you just want to enjoy a drink outside while listening to a live band.

Where to stay

Budget: If you’re on a budget, try the award winning hostel YHA Brisbane City. The rooms are clean and you’ll have the best rooftop terrace and the biggest kitchen you’re ever seen in a youth hostel. The location is superconvenient too!

Hotel: The Novotel Brisbane is located in the middle of CBD which means it’s strategically located. The Hotel has a great pool for some urban swimming and the staff is helpful and friendly. The rooms are spacious and well furnished, I’d totally reccommend it for everyone who wants to enjoy Brisbane with style.
