Songbird Festival Davos: The Opening Weekend

Festivals

Two weekends ago, winter clearly started to kick in here in Switzerland. And what better occasion to make things easier and escape a bit to the mountains again, where the chance for sun and having some warm rays on your sweater is way higher than the grey and foggy city. Obviously I didn’t go to Davos for any type of winter sports: I never learned it, and the idea of rolling myself in wet cold snow disappeared maybe at the age of 12. I made all my way up for the 8th edition of the Songbird Festival.

Switzerland may not be the tropical island surrounded by deep blue sea as I wish it was, but it has a lot to offer especially in terms of cultural events. For its tiny size compared to other European countries, it offers an extremely wide range of musical happenings all year round. Baloise Session is one of them.

The Interview: Claudia Assef, Founder of the First DJ Museum Worldwide

A couple of weeks ago I was at the Amsterdam Dance Event for the first time, which is one of the largest electronic music festivals in the world. This event is not only a networking platform for DJs, it’s also a great place to meet interesting people that are involved with dance music in different ways: producers, writers, photographers, directors and more. I was lucky enough to meet Claudia Assef on my press trip. I found her very fascinating: her knowledge, her way to talk aaand her amazing way to dress colorfully (which I sadly didn’t have the time to shoot). We bonded immediately and had great conversations at dinner about digital work and how electronic music evolved. Also, she is the founder of the first DJ Museum of the world, which I thought was a quite interesting idea, so I decided to do the first interview of my life with her in order to know more about the project.

Earlier this year in spring, I had the great opportunity to join one of the most important mountain festivals in Switzerland, which is Zermatt Unplugged (see post here). Just last week, this lovely acoustic singer/songwriter festival was taken from the Swiss alps down to Zurich city for the first time – lucky me, I had the chance to join it again for two days.

This time, for my northern festival tour, I’d like to actually take you a couple of miles more down to central Europe. To be exact, I’m taking you to my home country Switzerland, on the borders of the Lac Léman, to Lausanne, where I enjoyed the 10th edition of Electrosanne.

After being close to the North Sea, my festival schedule took me to another sandy beach located on one of the few lakes located around Berlin. The Helene Beach Festival is a musical event located around one hour away from the big city, and is able to lock half of its visitors (around 25 000 a year) out of the big city and bring them some vacation feeling close to their home town.

7 Days, 7 Stages and almost a record cracked of 300’000 visitors – something that started in 1976 as a small folk festival reached the biggest amount of musiclovers this year for its 40. birthday. I’m talking about the legendary Paléo Festival Nyon.

Seven years ago I had the first festival experience ever in my life. At the time my brother was a huge Justice fan, so the only showdate in Switzerland was their appearence at the Paléo Festival in Nyon. I basically had no idea what to expect and how an event like this looks like. So I drove down almost to the French border and was surprised of what I found – let’s say, 2007 was the year of the beginning of my very permanent festival visitor disease. And I’m thankful for that

Alright, alright… I know that you hear coming out of my posts a lot how much I love the very warm and beachy side of life and how great an all year round beachbabe life would be, BUT, if you are a frequent reader on this blog you probably should know that I love spending some time in the summer months up in the northern side of Europe.

I am a big fan of Montreux. If you are in Switzerland during summertime you absolutely can’t miss this place. It’s the riviera of our little country, where the lake gets a deep turquoise colour and you feel vacation vibes from everywhere. And you can’t obviously miss the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival!
